Why four affordable subwoofers beat one expensive one
There is a moment in every bass upgrade where you have to choose: one expensive subwoofer, or several cheaper ones. The hi-fi instinct says buy the best single box you can afford. For evenness across a room, that instinct is backwards — and it is one of the few places in audio where the cheaper path is also the measurably better one.
The short version: buy four modest subs and put one in each corner before you consider anything more expensive. Here is why that works, what it costs, and where the argument stops.
What you are actually buying
Below roughly 300 Hz you are listening to your room more than your speaker. Standing waves between the walls — room modes — carve the low end into peaks and nulls fixed in space: 60 Hz booms at the desk and vanishes on the couch.
A subwoofer excites those modes according to where it sits. One sub in one spot produces one interference pattern, and every seat lives somewhere in it. This is the part that matters for the buying decision: that pattern is set by position, not by the driver. A bigger, more expensive sub in the same corner plays the same peaks and the same nulls, just louder. Money spent on output does not buy evenness, because output was never what was uneven.
What does change the pattern is another source, somewhere else. So the question is not “how much subwoofer can I afford?” but “how many independent positions can I afford?” Those are very different shopping lists.
Why four, and why the corners
Every room mode reaches maximum pressure at the corners, so a corner sub drives all of them. On its own that is an output choice rather than an evenness one — which is exactly why single-sub advice defaults to a corner, and why it does not solve seat-to-seat variation. Four corners is a different animal.
Put a sub in each corner and you have two opposed pairs, one along each horizontal axis. Sources at opposite ends of a room see the odd-order modes between them with opposite polarity, so their contributions to those modes cancel rather than stack. You are no longer fighting the room mode by mode with EQ; you are arranging the sources so the dominant ones are driven weakly in the first place. The result is not just a flatter average — it is a much smaller spread between seats, which is the thing correction alone cannot fix.
Four is where that logic runs out of easy wins. In a typical room only a handful of dominant modes sit below 100 Hz, and four independently placed sources are enough degrees of freedom against them. Past four you are mostly buying output and placement flexibility, and the same money does more in bass trapping or measurement gear.
The arithmetic
This is the part that surprises people. A single flagship subwoofer sits comfortably in four-figure territory. Four SVS SB-1000 Pro subs land in roughly the same bracket — and one of those two options can put pressure at four different points in your room.

None of this is brand loyalty. Any four competent sealed subs with per-unit delay will make the argument work; this is simply the one we would buy, and the one we most often see people succeed with.
Where the argument stops
Two honest caveats, because “buy four” is not universal advice.
If you mix alone at a desk, one sub can genuinely be enough. You only need the response to behave in one small region of space, and that is solvable: place the sub where it measures well at the chair, dodge the worst null by moving the sub or the seat a foot, and correct what remains. This stops holding the moment a second seat matters.
Two subs is the biggest single step, and a fine place to start. Going from one to two buys more than going from two to four. If four is not in the budget today, buy two good ones and add the other two later rather than buying one expensive one now. The upgrade path only stays open in one of those directions.
And the idealised picture has limits: your room has a doorway, an alcove, drywall that flexes on one wall and concrete on another. Corner placement is a starting point that generalises well, not a guarantee. The part people skip
Four subs badly integrated can measure worse than one. Each needs a level, a delay, a polarity and a crossover to the mains, and none of those settings are independent — change one sub’s delay and the summed response shifts at every seat, and so does the handoff to the mains. Around an 80 Hz crossover in a stereo-plus-four-subs room, six sources are radiating overlapping output at once.
Hand-tuning that is combinatorial. Dial in sub two after sub one and your sub-one settings are stale; fix the crossover and all four need revisiting. With one sub and patience, trial and error gets there. With four, you are solving a joint problem one variable at a time, and it shows.
